Malaysia is a country that comprises of thirteen states and three federal territories in Southeast Asia with a complete landmass of 329,847 square kilometers (127,355 sq mi). The capital city is Kuala Lumpur; Putrajaya being the seat to the federal government. Malaysia as a combined state did not come into existence until 1963. Earlier, a set of colonies were founded by the United Kingdom from the late-18th century, and the western half of modern Malaysia was arranged of several separate kingdoms. The major cities are Penang, Ipoh, Malacca, Johor Baru, Shah Alam, Klang, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Miri, and Petaling Jaya. The terrain includes coastal plains and interior, jungle-covered mountains. The South China Sea divides peninsular Malaysia from East Malaysia on Borneo. The country has a tropical climate. Nationality of the people of the country is Malaysian, the population as estimated according to the 2008 is 27.5 million, the annual growth rate is 2.0%, the ethnic groups include Malay 53.3%, Chinese 26.0%, indigenous 11.8%, Indian 7.7%, others 1.2%. Religions: Islam (60.4%), Buddhism (19.2%), Christianity (9.1%), Hinduism (6.3%), other/none (5.0%). The languages include Bahasa Melayu (official), Chinese (various dialects), English, and Tamil, indigenous. The education is compulsory from 6 years, the attendance is 90.1% (primary), 60.0% (secondary). The total literacy- rate of the country is 93.5%. The infant mortality rate according to 2007 estimate is 6.7/1,000, the life expectancy as per 2007 estimate is female 76.4 yrs., male 71.9 yrs. The work force is 10.89 million, 2007, the occupational structure includes people engaged in services industry 57%; manufacturing industry 19%, mining and construction industry 9%; and agricultural sector 15%. Agricultural products of the country include palm oil, rubber, timber, cocoa, rice, tropical fruit, fish, and coconut. The industry types include electronics, electrical products, chemicals, food and beverages, metal and machine products, apparel. The trade merchandise exports include $185.0 billion which includes electronic products, manufactured goods, petroleum, palm oil, liquid natural gas, apparel, timber, rubber. The major exports markets are in U.S. 15.6%, Singapore 14.6%, Japan 9.1%, and China 8.8%. The merchandise imports include $154.0 billion where the major products are electronic products, machinery, chemicals, manufactured goods, petroleum products. The Major suppliers to the country are Japan 13.0%, China 12.9%, Singapore 11.5%, and U.S. 10.8%. |
